Energy Bounds for a Compressed Elastic Film on a Substrate

چکیده
We study pattern formation in a compressed elastic film which delaminates from a substrate. Our key tool is the determination of rigorous upper and lower bounds on the minimum value of a suitable energy functional. The energy consists of two parts, describing the two main physical effects. The first part represents the elastic energy of the film, which is approximated using the von Kármán plate theory. The second part represents the fracture or delamination energy, which is approximated using the Griffith model of fracture. A simpler model containing the first term alone was previously studied with similar methods by several authors, assuming that the delaminated region is fixed. We include the fracture term, transforming the elastic minimization into a free-boundary problem, and opening the way for patterns which result from the interplay of elasticity and delamination. After rescaling, the energy depends on only two parameters: the rescaled film thickness, σ, and a measure of the bonding strength between the film and substrate, γ. We prove upper bounds on the minimum energy of the form σγ and find that there are four different parameter regimes corresponding to different values of a and b and to different folding patterns of the film. In some cases the upper bounds are attained by self-similar folding patterns as observed in experiments. Moreover, for two of the four parameter regimes we prove matching, optimal lower bounds.

Blister patterns and energy minimization in compressed thin films on compliant substrates
This paper is motivated by the complex blister patterns sometimes seen in thin elastic films on thick, compliant substrates. These patterns are often induced by an elastic misfit which compresses the film. Blistering permits the film to expand locally, reducing the elastic energy of the system. It is therefore natural to ask: what is the minimum elastic energy achievable by blistering on a fixe...
متن کاملPhase Diagrams of Instabilities in Compressed Film-Substrate Systems.
Subject to a compressive membrane stress, an elastic film bonded on a substrate can become unstable, forming wrinkles, creases or delaminated buckles. Further increasing the compressive stress can induce advanced modes of instabilities including period-doubles, folds, localized ridges, delamination, and coexistent instabilities. While various instabilities in film-substrate systems under compre...
متن کاملAnalysis of a Compressed Thin Film Bonded to a Compliant Substrate: The Energy Scaling Law
We consider the deformation of a thin elastic film bonded to a thick compliant substrate, when the (compressive) misfit is far beyond critical. We take a variational viewpoint – focusing on the total elastic energy, i.e. the membrane and bending energy of the film plus the elastic energy of the substrate – viewing the buckling of the film as a problem of energy-driven pattern formation. We iden...
متن کاملSurface energy as a barrier to creasing of elastomer films: an elastic analogy to classical nucleation.
In a soft elastic film compressed on a stiff substrate, creases nucleate at preexisting defects and grow across the surface of the film like channels. Both nucleation and growth are resisted by the surface energy, which we demonstrate by studying creases for elastomers immersed in several environments--air, water, and an aqueous surfactant solution. Measurement of the position where crease chan...
متن کاملKinetic wrinkling of an elastic film on a viscoelastic substrate
A compressed elastic film on a compliant substrate can form wrinkles. On an elastic substrate, equilibrium and energetics set the critical condition and select the wrinkle wavelength and amplitude. On a viscous substrate, wrinkle grows over time and the kinetics selects the fastest growing wavelength. More generally, on a viscoelastic substrate, both energetics and kinetics play important roles...
